The Easter Island, otherwise known as Rapa Nui in Polynesian, is famous for its statues called maoi.The official name in Spanish, Isla de Pascua, means Easter Island in Spanish.It was given the name Easter Island by the islands first recorded European visitor, who encountered it on Easter Sunday, in 1722.There are three inactive volcanoes on the island. This is one of the most isolated inhabited islands in the world, as its 2180 miles away from Chile.It is not fully known when the maoi statues were carved, but some is known about how they were made.A total of 887 statues have been inventoried and 95 % of them are made out of the tuff, or easily worked volcanic ash.It all came from the same extinct volcano Rano Raraku.They were carved with stone chisels (Wikipedia).
